If ever you were to cross the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, you'll notice a stunning characteristic of the famous bridge that you may not see anywhere else: there are padlocks attached to wherever they can be attached, mostly to the fence around the statue of Renaissance man Benvenuto Cellini. Apparently the padlocks don't lock absolutely nothing! But I found myself wrong, because of an old love legend every Florentine knows. Legend tells if you attach a padlock to Ponte Vecchio (every surface is the right one) and then you throw the key in the river Arno, your love is going to be eternal (careful what you wish :). And that's the reason thousands of couples every year visit Ponte Vecchio I know it's not easy for a lot of people to believe in this kind of legends, but Ponte Vecchio is the most evocative location in Florence and when you find yourself in the heart of the old city centre, surrounded by hills and ancient bridges, everything becomes possible Watching the sunset on the river Arno is a timeless experience everyone should live one day or another.a unique panorama you'll remember for all your life The first padlock was probably placed in Ponte Vecchio by a locksmith that was trying to do some free advertising to his marvellous creations: we have to remember Ponte Vecchio had always a commercial side since the Medici timesnowadays you can fully enjoy the romantic side of the bridge when the shops are closed A couple of years ago the government had to release an ordinance to remove most of the padlocks, as they were starting to give Ponte Vecchio a pretty strange and gaudy appearancethe mission was not simple, as the padlocks were multiplying every day of the yearbut you have to agree that the people of Florence should do their best to keep the city's harmonious beauty intact! Today if you are caught locking anything to Ponte Vecchio, you have to pay a penalty of 50 eurosI think it's not so romantic! Some padlock are still there and will always be, we hope they contributed to flame some eternal love in Florence
