How Do You Know If You Want to Be an Elementary School Teacher?

By: Sandra Wilson

As you start looking into the courses, certificates and any other requirements to becoming an elementary education teacher, perhaps you should first consider this question. How do you know if you want to become an elementary school teacher? After all you will be assisting young children to grow and learn so it is best to be sure this is what you truly want.

In this article we will therefore provide you with some guidelines which will hopefully help you to know whether a career teaching elementary school children is right for you. Remember it is you that you will be playing a major role in the children's lives that you teach and will help them to develop both academically and socially. It is through your initial lessons with them that children will then learn how to achieve their goals in the future.

Most elementary school teachers find that they will teach more than one subject to their students. Are you well rounded in your own education and experiences? If not, you would be wise to further your own education by going back to school and gathering more experience and skill in whatever subject(s) you deem yourself weak in.

You may not want to be an elementary school teacher is you find your organizational skills to be lacking in your own life. Anyone who is disorganized themselves will find it hard to keep a class full of elementary school students organized. You will have a hard time keeping to the schedule and the curriculum.

Our next point in considering the question raised in the first paragraph is to decide if you actually like young children enough to want to be with them all day. What do you like and dislike about them? Creating a list of your own likes and dislikes where young children are concerned can guide you in answering the big question. If you find more dislikes than likes, but teaching is still something you want to do, perhaps it would be best to consider a different age group.

But as well as having a real love and liking for young children a person who wishes to become an elementary school teacher must not only be good with them. You must also be able to communicate with them easily and effectively. So look at how you communicate with children at the moment and how they react to the way in which you communicate with them.

One more good way to make your decision is to discuss this with working elementary school teachers who have been working as such for at least a few years. Even better is to spend time in the classroom with the teachers and their students. Observe them working with their students and carrying out the assigned lessons. Do you have the skills and resources to do this yourself as your career?

Realizing that you will bear a great responsibility as one of the important foundational people within an elementary school student's life as he or she grows into maturity, look at yourself, at who you are. What kind of person do others see? Is it someone who can fulfill this responsibility? These are some of the last points to ponder to know the real answer to "how do you know if you want to become an elementary school teacher?"
