People who spend a lot of time sitting at their desks in offices tend to be more prone to compounding existing back problems or developing new ones. To avoid this, it is important to choose the right type of office chair that promotes good posture and provides support to the lower back. Several kinds of ergonomic chairs are now available, which are ideal for office use. However, no one type of office chair is the best. There are a few things that every potential user needs to look for before buying an office chair that is perfect for their specific needs. Height of the Seat: You should be able to adjust the seat height easily. Many chairs have a pneumatic adjustment, which makes it easier. The seat should be adjusted such that your thighs are horizontal and your feet are flat on the floor with arms level with the desk. Lumbar support: It is important that your office chair provide proper support for the inward curve of your lower back. Sitting for long hours without supporting this curve could result in slouching. This flattening of the curve causes a strain in the structures of the lower spine. A chair that has height as well as depth lumbar adjustment enables every user to properly support this inward curve of the lower back. Depth and width of seat: The seat should be broad and deep enough to provide you adequate support and comfort. The depth of the seat (the distance from the front to the back) should be such that while sitting you can gain support from the backrest while your knees are at an approximate distance of 2-4 inches from the front edge of the seat. You should be able to adjust the backward as well the forward tilt of the chair. Backrest: The ideal width of the backrest of an office chair should be 12 to 19 inches. Whether it is separate from of or together with the seat, the height as well as the angle of the backrest should be adjustable. Arm rests: Just like the other components, armrests too need to be adjustable. You should be able to rest your arms comfortably while keeping the shoulders relaxed. Material of the seat: The seat as well as the back of the chair should have an adequate amount of padding so as to render the chair comfortable enough to sit on for long periods of time. Swivel: A swivel chair gives you a wider reach around your desk without having to strain.
